Abstract

Successful engagement in the occupation of driving extends beyond the operation of primary and secondary controls – it also requires consideration of vehicle selection.  This process requires that the following areas must be carefully considered:

  • Ingress/egress,
  • Loading/unloading,
  • Stowage and securement of mobility devices,
  • Seating and positioning,
  • Access to primary and secondary controls.

Specialists are often called upon to identify, problem solve and assist with vehicle selection, and vehicle modification solutions to fit an individual’s specific client factors and performance skills. Work in the field of driver rehabilitation inevitably requires the ability to problem solve a range of complex and challenging cases. This is especially true as vehicles continue to advance, reshape, and evolve.

This course is for the specialist looking to expand their foundational knowledge and apply careful analysis of these areas and provide clients with a list of vehicles and modifications that will fit their needs.

  • We will review both historical and current vehicle conversions and modifications.
  • Then, through the lens of the specialist, we will discuss current trends and learn about stakeholders engaged in the vehicle modification process from the manufacturer to modifier to final fitting to the end user.
  • Connections will be made between the impact of medical conditions and/or injury on client factors, performance skills, and environmental demands.
  • Expert-led discussions will engage learners to identify methods for clinical reasoning, prioritization of decision-making, and identification of community mobility solutions for complex client cases, including both drivers and passengers.
  • Recommendations will be discussed utilizing industry best practice guidelines, current evidence, expert knowledge, licensing regulations, and industry standards in order to support fitness to drive.
