Part 2: OT Driver Rehabilitation Specialist Training
Learn the Gold Standard for OT Driver Rehab: Evaluations and Interventions in the Vehicle. 35 hours. 3.5 AOTA CEUs.
Are you an occupational therapy practitioner tired of…
Seeing everyone in your facility dodge the question: “Can I drive again?” Leaving clients to figure it out alone.
Spending your days in bathrooms and addressing ADLs, only to hear your client say, “I’ll just have someone do it for me.”
Asking for well-deserved raises, only to be told they’ll, “Look into it for next year.”
Most of all, would you like to shed insurance, productivity, and facility restrictions so you can implement the customized, client-centered, joy-inducing treatment ideas you keep thinking of?
Instead of staying in your lane, set yourself up to control your hours and provide specialized services to help clients achieve their driving goals.
When you complete both the Part 1 + Part 2 trainings, you can apply for the DRP (Driver Rehab Professional) micro-credential from ADED. You’ll be on track to move toward becoming a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist should you choose.
**Part 1 is a pre-requisite for the Part 2 training. They’re available to purchase separately or bundled.
Similar to pilots, you need practice hours BEFORE you are eligible for certification… but unlike pilots, you’re often working alone after training! Hands-on training is IMPERATIVE for your success and safety.
This isn’t just an online CEU course…
Before you take clients on the road, experience the equipment and learn how to gain control of the car from the instructor’s seat.
It’s hard to explain and teach what you haven’t experienced, right?
That’s why hands-on experience with different vehicles and adaptive equipment is critical before taking clients on the road.
The Part 2 course is one of a kind by providing this on-the-road experience guided by an experienced OT DRS in driver rehab vehicles.
15 hours of online training that builds on the clinic-based information from Part 1.
This advanced-level course provides everything you need to know to safely and effectively work with clients in the car and on the road.

“Susie the Driving OT” and owner of Adaptive Mobility Services
I’m so glad you’re considering becoming an OT driver rehab specialist!
Driving is my passion. I believe more OT practitioners should address driving in the clinic and as specialists in the car.
Truly, no other profession is better equipped to holistically support clients as they return to driving or transition into driving retirement when necessary.
You know, I wasn’t always “The Driving OT.” I started my career just like every other OT, as a generalist working in clinics and health systems.
But when I discovered driving as a practice area, I was hooked. I’ve never felt more aligned as an OT than when I’m in the car with clients.
Driving allows clients to do the things they have to do and the things they want to do. 🚗
Now, I’ve spent decades helping drivers understand and improve their driving ability and confidence after an illness, medical event, health condition, or injury.
I’ve owned and operated Adaptive Mobility Services for over 6 years. I provide driver rehab services to clients and education and mentorship to occupational therapy practitioners.
I’ve trained nearly 100 OTPs in the car and have taught thousands of others online.
When you become an OT DRS, you can have more time flexibility, increased income potential, and better work-life balance so you can care for yourself and your family in a way that aligns with your values.
I can’t wait to have you join us for the Part 2 training!
Below, you’ll find a lot of answers to common questions. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, send an email to me at [email protected].
Unlike other speciality areas of practice for OTs, after you complete your training, you practice in the field of driver rehab and gain experience BEFORE becoming certified. So, no, you don’t need to be certified to start in driver rehabilitation, but you DO need advanced training, including hands-on training, and the right equipment to get started.
Taking the Part 1 & Part 2 trainings help you achieve this faster, should you choose to become certified. But remember, ADED (Association for Driver Rehab Specialists) is the organization that offers the Certified Driving Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRSTM) examination. Adaptive Mobility Services is not part of ADED, we are an approved provider of education for them. When you take Part 1 and Part 2 from us, you’re eligible to apply for the DRP (Driving Rehab Professional) micro-credential from ADED. By doing this, you’ll have fewer hours required to achieve certification. Once you obtain your DRP, you only need 832 hours of experience before you are eligible to sit for your Certified Driving Rehabilitation Specialist exam. (Without the DRP, you need approximately 1664 hours of experience before taking the exam.)
It depends… If you’re working with an established driver rehab group, they’ll ensure you have the appropriate equipment, liability insurance, and car insurance to get in the car after this training. If you plan to start a private practice, you’ll need to check your state regulations, get additional insurance, and purchase a driver rehab vehicle that has the instructor equipment before you take clients on the road. If you need additional guidance or support to get your business off the ground, we can set up mentorship services.
Please email me at [email protected] so we can discuss your individual situation.
We are an AOTA-approved provider and an ADED-approved provider. The Part 2 course includes 15 contact hours of online education and 20 hours of live, in-person education, for a total of 35 hours. Part 1 is a prerequisite for this Part 2 training and includes 25 hours of online training, focused on driving risk assessments and treatments in the clinic setting. After completing both parts, you’ll have 60 hours of continuing education and be eligible to get your DRP (Driving Rehabilitation Professional) micro-credential from ADED.
We’ll work together from 8:30 to 5 on the first two days and 8:30 to 12:30 on the third day. Most of this time is spent working with the cars and driving. You’ll have completed all the online training before arriving and my goal is to maximize your skill acquisition with as much hands-on time as possible. We cap enrollment to ensure everyone has plenty of time to work with equipment, drive, and practice instructing other drivers. There are generally only 3-6 students in each session. I firmly believe that getting your hands on the wheel is the best way for you to learn and grow as an OT driver rehab specialist, that’s what makes this training so unique compared to others
We’ll start and end the day at my home. I’ll have snacks and water to share. (Let me know if you have food allergies/intolerances/preferences!) Lunch will be at a restaurant during the first two days. It’s a very small group, so we’ll take a vote and find a place we can all enjoy. Dinners are on your own. Attendees often go out to dinner together, but you’re more than welcome to do what’s best for you.
Your travel, lodging, and food are the only extra expenses. We can also set up a payment plan for the Part 2 training, and there are some scholarships available. Email me at [email protected] to inquire about either.
After this training, you’re ready to enter the field of driving rehabilitation. Some OTPs continue to work in clinics and hospitals with a greater understanding of the on-the-road process. Others join established driver rehabilitation programs and complete in-clinic and on-the-road assessments and treatments. But many OTPs start building their own driver rehabilitation businesses after this training. If you choose to start your own business, you’ll check your state requirements, get liability and vehicle insurance, and equip your vehicle with the appropriate equipment. We’ll discuss this a bit during the Part 2 training. Then, if you want further support for your business building, I have a mentorship program specifically designed to help you.
When you register, you’ll receive an email with ALL the details, but below is a summary so you can plan ahead.

I understand. I hear from OTs and OTAs every week who are curious about getting into driver rehabilitation but have hesitations and questions.
They have questions about the process, where to start, the logistics, the liability, insurance, and how to find clients or hire on with an established clinic.
The best advice I can give you right now is to decide if you can picture yourself as a driver rehab specialist.
If you had all of the information, skills, and support you needed to become an OT DRS, would you want to be doing this work?
>> If the answer is yes, then start taking small steps toward your dream.
Take Part 1 and Part 2, then trust that the next best step for you will become clear.
Maybe you’ll stay in your current setting but better educate clients about driving risks and readiness.
Or maybe you’ll step into driver rehabilitation and start your own business. A business that gives you flexibility in your schedule and the power to choose who you work with and what your treatment sessions look like.
It all starts by deciding to take the first step.
If you’re on the fence, or still have questions, I’d love to set up a free 20-minute consult to talk about your goals with driving.
During the call, we’ll walk through the process for specializing and answer your specific questions. No pressure from my end — I truly want to be a resource and help you clarify and achieve your career goals. Email me to set up a time to connect: [email protected]
No matter what you choose, I’m here to support you and welcome you into the specialty practice area of driving whenever you’re ready.
