Course Description

Driving is a physical activity that generally requires the use of arms, legs, and body to operate the vehicle. But what happens when injury or illness changes movement, coordination, sensation, or proprioception? How do those changes impact fitness to drive? In this dynamic course, take a deep dive into the evaluation of physical performance skills needed for driving. Look at strategies for assessing range of motion, strength, coordination, sensation, & proprioception specific to driving and explore a variety of evidenced-based assessments and tests & measures for each of these performance skills. Consider the role of coordination for the occupation of driving and the impact of slowed coordination on safety. Learn about the impact of impaired sensation on foot placement & pedal use. Explore the use of a brake reaction timer or driving simulator to look at reaction time in preparation for a driving evaluation and considerations for posture, balance, falls, & pain. Understand the role of functional mobility for driving and engagement in the community and be introduced to the role of the OT driver rehabilitation specialists to support engagement thru driving specific adaptive equipment. This is course is ideal for the occupational therapy practitioner addressing driving in the clinic. This course is also a great foundation for those OT's advancing into driver rehabilitation.
