What is the Readiness to Drive: IADL Checklist?

The Checklist is a list of specific performance skills commonly performed independently by young adults in broad categories of everyday activities or instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) including: personal and healthcare skills, home and family responsibilities, cooking and kitchen activities, interpersonal relationships, and community skills.

Who is the Checklist for?

This Checklist was developed specifically for teens and young adults with autism spectrum disorder. While it might be used for other populations, it is not appropriately designed for individuals with significant cognitive or physical impairments.

What is the purpose of the Checklist?

The Checklist is a guide for young people and their parents to 1) determine if they are independent in IADL tasks that should be precursors to driving, and/or 2) a guide to assist young people in development the independence in IADLs before initiating learning to drive.

Who should use the Checklist?

The Checklist is currently being piloted by Drs. Dickerson and Monahan to be used by occupational therapy practitioners. Our intention is for practitioners to use it with novice drivers with ASD and their parents. Our hope is to have practitioners to offer feedback about the feasibility and usefulness of the Checklist in their practice.
